LA Supreme Court Strikes Down State's HHR Gaming
In a decision that goes against the interests of four racetracks, the Louisiana Supreme Court ruled that a law legalizing historical horse racing machines is unconstitutional because it did not require local voter approval beforehand.
Lawsuits were filed by local voters and residents against the owners of Delta Downs, Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots, Louisiana Downs, and Evangeline Downs, challenging the legality of gaming on HHR devices that closely resemble slot machines.
The state supreme court's ruling against the racetracks was issued on March 21 and, according to at least one track operator, is expected to result in reductions in purses. Read more here!

Loved Seeks Second Straight Graded Score in Bayakoa
Trained by Brendan Walsh, Loved achieved her first graded stakes victory in the Falls City Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs on November 28. Now, she looks to secure back-to-back wins as she competes against five opponents over a distance of 1 1/16 miles in the $250,000 Bayakoa Stakes (G3) on February 8 at Oaklawn Park.
In the Falls City, the Godolphin homebred, a Medaglia d'Oro half-sister to two-time grade 1 winner Maxfield, positioned herself midpack early on before unleashing a powerful rally to decisively defeat seven competitors by 3 3/4 lengths.
The 6-year-old mare has shown versatility throughout her career, winning both on the lead and from behind—an asset that could prove advantageous on Saturday, especially with the inside horses, Corningstone and Wild Bout Hilary, coming off frontrunning stakes victories. Read more about Loved!

Latest Horse Racing News 2023:
According to his trainer, Mage, the winner of the Kentucky Derby, will not participate in the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic. Mage had not yet gone to California for the upcoming world championships at Santa Anita next weekend.
As per Gustavo Delgado post: “He presented a feverish state this morning and we have noticed symptoms of loss appetite,” continued “We were very enthusiastic about the condition that the horse was going through, and despite how disappointed we feel right now, we are confident in a speedy recovery.”
Co-owner of Mage, Ramiro R. said: “Timing stinks but lucky we caught it early. Can’t run at below 100%; horse comes first. Onwards to the Pegasus and his 4YO campaign.”
Mage, the winner of the Derby with odds of 15-1, came in 3rd place in the Preakness, 2nd place in the Haskell, and finished last in the Travers, which was his most recent race on August 26th.
With his departure, the Classic now only has one Triple Crown race champion remaining. Arcangelo, who claimed victories in both the Belmont and Travers races, will be the sole representative. Meanwhile, National Treasure, the winner of the Preakness, is anticipated to compete in the $1 million Dirt Mile event scheduled for Saturday.
Geaux Rocket Ride has also been withdrawn from the Classic after the colt suffered an injury during a workout at Santa Anita on Saturday. Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, who was riding the horse at the time, fortunately escaped unharmed.
According to a statement from the Breeders' Cup, Geaux Rocket Ride sustained a condylar fracture, which is a type of repetitive strain injury that can lead to a fracture in the cannon bone above the fetlock due to the high loads experienced during intense workouts.
The absence of both Mage and Geaux Rocket Ride paves the way for two additional horses to enter the Classic's maximum field of 14 horses when final entries are submitted and post positions are determined on Monday.
